University, 1908 and Graded Crews

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Another shake-up was made yesterday afternoon in the order of the University crew, in order to obtain, if possible, a more effective combination. Shepard, who has not rowed on the University crew since May 4, took Farley's place at stroke. George returned to his former position at 7, and McLeod was shifted from 4 on the second boat to the same place on the University crew.

The orders yesterday:

First crew--Stroke, Shepard: 7. George; 6. Filley; 5. Lawson; 4, McLeod; 3. Flint; 2. Tappan; bow, Burchard; cox., Montgomery.

Second crew--Stroke, Pleasonton; 7, Gills; 6. Bacon; 5, Meier; 4. Farley; 3, Kellogg; 2. Corlett; bow, Lilly; cox., Chase.

Freshman Rowing

Three changes have been made in the order of the Freshman crew since Saturday. Onativia, who was elected captain of the Freshman Newell eight, is again at stroke. Fahnestock and Comstock have been moved from the second boat to 5 and 3, respectively, on the first.

Yesterday afternoon the two crews took a time row over the two-mile course, starting at Longwood Bridge and finishing at the Union Boat Club. The first crew gave the second a start of two and a half lengths and finished about fifteen feet in the lead. Considering the strong wind and the rough water which they met during the last mile, the crews rowed well.

The orders of the first two crews yesterday were as follows:

First crew--Stroke, Onativia; 7, Amberg; 6, Fish; 5, Fahnestock; 4, Richardson; 3, Comstock; 2, Despard; bow, Wiggins; cox., Arnold.

Second crew--Stroke, Ball; 7, Warren; 6, Phillips; 5. Mason; 4, Bacon; 3. Parke; 2, Knowlton; bow, Henry; cox., Whitney.

Graded Rowing.

During the last few days the work of the Weld graded crews has been extremely satisfactory. In addition to the Weld Freshman eight, three crews have been organized: two graded crews and a four-oar. The first Weld crew is rowing well together and has developed a strong drive. It compares favorably with the class crews.

Conditions at the Newell Boat Club are at present less satisfactory than at the Weld. This is of course due to the fact that the Sophomore and Freshman second crews, which row from the Newell, have not been disbanded, and there is therefore less material for the graded crews. Owing to lack of candidates the Newell graded crew has been unable to row since Monday, when it was first organized. More candidates for the graded crews are urged to come out at both clubs. Coxswains are especially needed
