In the first day of play in the fourteenth annual intercollegiate chess tournament between Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Princeton, which is in progress at the West Side Republican Club, Broadway and 83d street, New York, Columbia took the lead, defeating Princeton by a score of 3 1-2 to 1-2; and Harvard tied Yale by a score of 2 to 2.
For the remaining two days the schedule of play is as follows:
Friday, December 22--Harvard vs. Columbia; Yale vs. Princeton.
Saturday, December 23--Harvard vs. Princeton; Columbia vs. Yale.
