Hockey meeting Yesterday

Yesterday afternoon there was a meeting of candidates for the University hockey team at which short speeches were made by Coach Winsor, Captain Newhall, and Trainer McMaster. Coach Winsor emphasized the importance of practicing as much as possible during the vacation. He explained to the men trying for the different positions the points in which they should endeavor to be especially proficient. McMaster spoke briefly on the importance of training and said that hockey was as hard on a player's wind and powers of endurance as any college sport. The hockey situation, he said, is more serious than ever before.

Captain Newhall reiterated, in part, McMaster's statements, and added that the team had been severely handicapped by most unfavorable weather conditions, as well as by the loss of at least seven promising candidates through injuries or poor academic standing. Only by the hardest work on the part of every candidate can be University team win the Columbia game, which comes shortly after the recess.

Weather permitting, practice, which will be announced on the usual bulletin, will be held today. Active training will begin on January 3, and about ten men will be taken to the training table, which will be formed at that time. Captains of the three upper class teams will be elected and practice for all the class teams will begin a few days after the vacation. The following 35 men have been picked to form the University squad: Bartels, Briggs, Campbell, Chalifoux, Claflin, Cowdin, Crosby, Dougherty, Edgell, Francis, A. Fraser-Campbell, E. Fraser-Campbell, Harding, E. Irving, L. Irving, Ivy, Leonard, McCreery, Mackay, MacLeod, Minot, D. Newhall, M. Newhall, Niles, Palmer, Pell, Prescott, Pruyn, Rivinius, Sampson, Townsend, Warren, F. Washburn, Willetts.

The game with Andover scheduled for yesterday afternoon, was not played on account of the poor ice on the neighboring ponds.
