Basketball Work of Last Week

The work of the backetball candidates during the past week consisted for the most part of practice for the interclass series, which resulted in a victory for the Sophomores. The men who were ineligible for these class teams, however, held light practice every night after the class team work was finished. It was not until Friday that the real work of the University candidates began, when practically all the men on the class teams except the Freshmen, were taken to the University squad.

On Friday night the practice was very poor. The men played a rough individual game and the shooting for the baskets was extermely ragged. In the second practice, however, various changes in the lineup caused a marked improvement, and the second team, which was made up of good players, failed to score on the first team. The men handled themselves and the ball better, and the passing was more accurate. In shooting for baskets the work was still poor. At present the officials are penalizing very heavily for fouls in order to eliminate rough play.

The great difficulty at present is the finding of a good forward. If no man of sufficient ability is discovered during the next week, it is possible that Captain Griffiths will be moved from his regular position at guard to one of the forward positions.

The material this year is very good as a whole, although Griffiths is the only player of remarkable ability. It is probable, therefore, that the first and second teams will be evenly matched. No regular coach will be appointed; but Captain Griffiths will develop the team with the aid of Mr. Schrader, the gymnasium director.

The Freshman team, which has now begun its regular work for the season, has not come up to expectations. L. O. Howard '07, who is coaching the team, is greatly handicapped in his work by lack of material and failure of the men to report regularly.

The University shooting team was defeated on Saturday by the Boston Athletic Association by a score of 209 to 187.
