This afternoon at 3 o'clock the first division of the Dormitory crews will race downstream over a one and three-eights mile course, ending at the University Boat Club. Immediately after, the second division will race over the same course. These races will be continued tomorrow and Thursday, and a straightaway race will probably be rowed on Friday between the crews having the most bumps to their credit. The crews have been divided into two sections and will line up for the start in the order named:
Division A--1, Claverly; 2, Westmorly; 3, Dunster-Drayton; 4, Holyoke (first); 5, Waverly; 6, Brattle Street; 7, Mt. Auburn Street; 8, Holworthy-Stoughton.
Division B--1, Matthews; 2, Perkins; 3, Thayer; 4, Fairfax; 5, Weld; 6, Russell; 7, Holyoke (second); 8, Grays. The crews will line up for the start 90 feet apart and the starting positions will be indicated by buoys placed in the river at the proper interval. Referees will be stationed on the shore and bumps will be signalled by three pistol shots. As soon as the signal is given both the bumping crew and the crew bumped will drop out.
As the chances of a good crew in these races may be spoiled by the careless work of a coxswain, it is important that all coxswains study the chart of the river and observe the rules decided on by the executive committee. All bumps must be made on the outside. In order to identify the crews the coxswains will wear large numbers on their backs.
All men must report at the boat houses, dressed to row, promptly at 2.45 o'clock this afternoon. The Athletic Committee has given permission to hold the races at this time and all necessary cuts will be excused at the Office, but work thus lost must be made up.
The following men will act as officials and must report at the University Boat House at 2.15 o'clock: Newhall, Bacon, Richardson, Flint, Richards, Wiggins, Burchard, Ivy, Arnold, Meier, Lawson, Corlett, E. Smith, Gill, Amberg, Fahnstock, Fish, Glass, Emmons, Morgan.
Development and Orders of Crews.
The work of the crews during the past week has been very satisfactory. All the boats have improved rapidly and the races this afternoon promise to be very close. Most of the crews still have a tendency to rush the slides and to clip the stroke at the finish, but the coaches have done a great deal to correct these faults.
The crews that are rowing from the Newell Boat Club are very evenly matched. All the men have been reporting regularly and the improvement during the past week is consequently very apparent. The Claverly crew has shown as much improvement as any in the past few days.
At the Weld Boat Club the work has been equally encouraging. The Westmorly crew has been doing promising work and should make a good showing.
The Holworthy-Stoughton eight, which has shown steady improvement for several weeks, has fallen off little, but will probably do well today. The two Holyoke crews are doing well and put, lots of drive into the stroke.
