There was no scrimmage for the regular first eleven, but a team made up mainly of substitutes lined up against the second eleven, and in 25 minutes scored two touchdowns by running hard and excellent team play. In place of a scrimmage the first team ran through signals in the following order: l.e., O'Brien; l.t., Brill; l.g., Burr; c., White; r.g., Kersburg; r.t., Squires; r.e., Macdonald, Hall; q.b., Starr: l.h.b., Foster; r.h.b., Hurley; f.b., Paul.
The preliminary work consisted mostly of punting practice, and the line men were coached in breaking through on the kicks. Parker tried goal kicking under the direction of J. Lawrence '01. After the scrimmage Coach Waters gave the line men very thorough coaching in blocking and breaking through. Carr did only light work. Captain Hurley ran through signals in his regular position at right halfback. Knowlton has been added to the list of injured and will probably be out of the game two weeks with water on the knee. Although it is not quite certain how seriously Nesmith injured his leg, he will be unable to play for some time. Newhall's bad shoulder will prevent his playing for at least a week. The first touchdown in the scrimmage was scored by the substitutes after a very few plays. Shohl received the kickoff on the 27-yard line, and after rushing the ball only three yards the second eleven was held for downs. The ball was quickly carried to the 12-yard line, and by excellent team play, Leonard was sent over for the touchdown.
After the next kickoff the ball changed hands several times on punts, and was twice given to the substitutes for punts. Leonard's last punt went over the goal line and Coach Brown kicked out from the 25-yard line. Wendell caught the ball and by clever running carried it back 15-yards to the second team's 45-yard line. A few rushes put the ball on the 25-yard line and Spear, aided by the whole team, went through for the touchdown. In the rest of the scrimmage there were several fumbles, and on one occasion the second team nearly scored. After a loss resulting from Cunniff's poor pass the second eleven secured the ball on downs on the 30-yard line. Kempner made a quarterback run of 17 yards around left end, but Pell fumbled on the 4-yard line, Nichols securing the ball. Leonard punted out to the 28-yard line. Coach Brown's attempt at a drop kick failed. Time was called. The annual Exeter-Andover football game will be held November 11 at Exeter.
