In the preliminary and first rounds of the twenty-fifth annual intercollegiate tournament, which began on the courts of the Merion Cricket Club, Haverford, Pa., today, the Harvard entries won three matches and lost two. The matches in doubles will begin tomorrow.
The summary of the matches played yesterday is as follows:
Preliminary round.--Whitman '06 defeated, Downey (Pennsylvania) 6-3, 6-4; Sulloway 2L. defeated S. Field 6-2, 7-5; Niles '09 defeated Miller 6-3, 6-4; Sunstein (Princeton) defeated Field '06, 6-1, 13-11; Thompson (Princeton) defeated Liner (Williams) 6-1, 6-2; Randall (Princeton) defeated Spaulding (Yale) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Behr (Yale) defeated Register (Princeton) 6-4, 6-4:
First round.--Dewhurst (Pennsylvania) defeated Niles '09, 6-3, 6-2.
