Meetings of Learned Societies.

At the meeting of the American Economic Association held in Chicago during the Christmas recess Professor F. W. Taussig was re-elected president of the Association for the ensuing year. Professor Taussig spoke on "The Present Position of the Doctrine of Free Trade." Professor J. L. Laughlin '73, of the University of Chicago, read a paper on "The Theory of Prices," and Professor J. H. Gray '87, of Northwestern University, discussed railroad topics. These addresses, together with one by Professor A. P. Andrew '95, on "The Theory of Money," will be printed in the report of the proceedings.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science held meetings in Philadelphia during recess, and plans were made for bringing into closer relationship the Botanical Society of America, the Society for Plant Morphology and Physiology and several other botanical societies. The next annual meeting of the Association will be held in New Orleans next December.

Professor G. F. Moore and Mr. E. Robinson '79 were elected vice-presidents of the Archaeological Institute of America at its meeting in Boston December 28. The Institute decided to hold its next annual meeting at Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y.

At the invitation of Professors Royce and Munsterberg, the annual meetings next December of the American Philosophical Association and of the American Psychological Association will be held in Emerson Hall. These meetings will be the first of the public nature to be held in the new hall.

Professor F. H. Gummere h. '90, of Haverford College, was elected president and Professor H. E. Greene '81, of Johns Hopkins University, a vice-president of the Modern Language Association at its meeting in Providence during Christmas week. The next meeting place, of the Association has not yet been decided.

At the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, held in Philadelphia on December 28, three papers were presented by Dr. R. C. Wells of the Department of Chemistry, the first, on the personal investigations of Dr. Wells and Professor T. W. Richards, on "Atomic Weights of Sodium and Chlorine," the second on "The Efficiency of Centrifugal Purifications," by Professor Richards, the third on "Electro-Stenolysis and Faraday's Law," by Professor Richards and Mr. B. S. Lacy.
