WINTER TRACK WORK BEGINS

In Gymnasium This Afternoon.--Meeting of Candidates in Union Friday.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Regular winter work for all candidates for the University track team will begin at the Gymnasium today. The runners will be formed into squads which will meet at 11, 12, 3.30 and 4.30 o'clock, respectively, every day except Saturday, on which day there will be only one squad, meeting at 12 o'clock. Men may join the squad most convenient for them, and squad captains will be chosen later from among the members of last year's team. Candidates for the field events will meet between the hours of 2.30 and 5 o'clock: shot-putters and high-jumpers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, if possible, at 3.30; pole-vaulters on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The work will be light at first and will consist of exercise with the dumb-bells and chest-weights, practicing starts in the Gymnasium, and outdoor running on the wooden track on Holmes Field. As the material for this year's team consists chiefly of new men, winter work is of the greatest importance in developing them both for the important indoor meets this winter, and for all outdoor work in the spring. Mr. Garcelon will have charge of the men and will coach the squads daily, paying especial attention to the hurdlers. He will be assisted by a number of graduates.

On Friday evening, January 6, the entire squad will meet in the Union and will be addressed by Mr. Garcelon, who will outline the policy and plans for the year. Several other short speeches will be made by graduates who have been prominent in track athletics.

At the sixteenth annual handicap meet of the Boston Athletic Association, to be held in Mechanics Hall, Boston, on the evening of Saturday, February 11, there will be a relay race, subject to the approval of the Athletic Committee, between teams representing Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. Trials for the team will be held ten days before the meet and men not making the team will be tried for the class teams, which will run for the class championship.
