On Monday will appear the first issue of a monthly magazine published by the University Debating Council entitled "Bothsides." The paper will be devoted to the interests of school and college debating and aims to be broad enough in scope to secure the support of every debating society in America. It will contain accounts and criticisms of intercollegiate and school debates, and articles of general interest, either on debating or on public questions especially adapted for debate, which shall have been previously analyzed in the paper.
Promises of contributions from public and professional men and from members of college faculties have been obtained, and it is hoped to make the paper of definite value as an intercollegiate magazine, as well as a review of current topics. Besides Princeton and Yale, a large number of colleges have already promised support. Although in reporting debates, "Bothsides" will aim to cover all those of interest, it will give preference to the contests of colleges which support it.
The editor in charge of the first issue is F. B. Wagner 3L. For future issues the University Debating Council will elect a permanent editor to represent Harvard on the editorial board. The presidents of the local debating clubs at other colleges that subscribe to the paper will each be asked to appoint one editor for the magazine. In this way the editorial staff will embrace a large number of colleges throughout the country.
Following are the contents of the first number, which will be 16 pages in length: "The Debating Method," by Governor L. F. C. Garvin of Rhode Island, Amherst '68; "Review of the Yale-Princeton Debate on American Empire"; "The Ffteenth Amendment Debated by Pennsylvania and Virginia"; "Analysis and Argument of Timely Questions."
The local subscription price of the paper will be $1 a year, but an arrangement will be made with the University, Sophomore, or Freshman debating clubs whereby men who have paid their dues in those organizations may receive copies each month without additional charge. Similar club subscription rates will be made at other colleges taking "Bothsides."
