The University hockey team defeated Columbia by a score of 5 to 0 in the first game in its intercollegiate schedule Saturday night at the St. Nicholas Rink, New York.
At the start the University team took the offensive and kept the puck in Columbia's territory the greater part of the game. Callaway shot the first goal, taking the puck from the centre of the rink and scoring on a swift shot from the side. The second point was made by Wilder after a scrimmage in front of Columbia's goal, and two minutes later Callaway scored again on a similar play. The period ended with the score 3 to 0 in Harvard's favor. In the second period the University team weakened somewhat, but scored twice. Callaway made the first goal of the half on a life from the side of the rink, and soon after Wilder scored on a pass from Newhall who had carried the puck the length of the ice.
The work of the University team was a distinct improvement over any practice this season, and gave promise of great development. The team play of the forwards was consistent throughout, but their greatest improvement was shown in following back after losing the puck. All the forwards were very quick in this respect, and greatly aided the defense by the closeness with which they covered their opponents. The defense had little difficulty in stopping the advance of the Columbia forwards.
