As there is apt to be so much misunderstanding about Commencement tickets, a statement should be made each year explaining the basis on which distribution is made.
There are 1227 available seats in Sanders Theatre. There are over a thousand candidates for degrees. Experience has shown that more than half this number attend the Commencement exercises; consequently half the seats in the Theatre are reserved for them. This leaves some six hundred seats, much more than half of which have heretofore been given and will this year be given to candidates for degrees for the use of their friends. The remaining smaller portion is distributed to the higher officers of the University, the guests of the Corporation, such as friends of those who are to receive honorary degrees, to benefactors of the University, and to certain public functionaries. In view of these facts it is obvious that it is the small size of the academic theatre that absolutely prevents a proper provision for the friends of candidates for degrees.
For A.B. Degrees.
Since the number of tickets for the Commencement exercises in Sanders Theatre available for relatives and friends of the candidates for degrees is limited (170 being reserved for candidates for the degree of A.B.) the following arrangements for distribution to such candidates have been made. Any candidate for A.B. who wishes a ticket must send a request in writing to the Class Day Committee, Box C, before Monday noon, June 27. The tickets will be assigned by lot Monday afternoon. A list of the successful applicants will be posted at Thurston's and on the official bulletin board in the south entry of University Hall. Tickets must be called for at the following hours: Tuesday, June 28, between 11.30 and 1, and between 4 and 5; Wednesday, June 29, between 8 and 9 at the H.A.A. office. Candidates for degrees march to the Theatre in procession and do not need tickets. B.S. HURLBUT. CLASS DAY COMMITTEE.
For S.B. Degrees.
Candidates for the degree of S.B. who wish tickets for friends may apply in writing, at University Hall 16, not later than 12 M. next Monday, for not more than one ticket each to the exercises in Sanders Theatre on Commencement morning. Since the number of tickets is limited, the assignment will be made by lot. The names of successful applicants will be posted on the door of University Hall 16, at 3 P.M. on Monday, and the tickets must be called for in person before 12 M. on Tuesday. Candidates enter the Theatre in the procession and do not need tickets for themselves. J.L. LOVE, Secretary.
