The prospects for the fencing team next year are not particularly favorable. Of this year's University squad the following eight men will again be available: W. McLeod '05, who has been elected captain for next year, R. S. Earle 2L, A. Tyng '04, L. Sargent '05, J. R. Nichols '06, L. F. Gilbert '06, C. E. Nichols '07, and W. F. Low, Jr., '07. R. E. Daniels '05 will return next year but may not be able to fence on account of an injury.
Although, as is evident, there will be no lack of material, the question of efficient training will be a difficult one. Under the new financial regulations of the Athletic Committee it will probably be impossible to re-engage M. Pianelli as a regular instructor. As fencing must depend largely on professional teaching for success, this will prove a severe handicap to the team's development.
It is planned to call out the candidates during the last week in October and give them instruction under the more experienced men. Classes will, if possible, be arranged to meet at regular intervals under M. Pianelli whose services will be secured partly by payment by the men themselves and partly by subscriptions of the Fencers' Club and by general contributions. After the number of candidates has been reduced, these classes will provide regular work for the University squad which will be formed.
Probably no matches will be held away from Boston except the intercollegiate championship match in New York in March. Besides the usual open and University novice tournaments and the class championship match, there will probably be a competition for fencers of the junior grade. H. St. Gaudens '03, captain of the 1903 University team, has offered individual cups for the winners of the class championship.
