HARVARD, 6; EXETER, 3.

Interesting Game Marred by Errors and Poor Batting of University Team.

The University baseball nine defeated Exeter yesterday afternoon at Exeter, N. H., in a fast and interesting game, by a score of 6 to 3.

The comparatively small score was due to the absolute inability of the Harvard team to hit at critical times, to three inexcusable errors by the infield, and to some stupid base running at the beginning of the game. The team made nine hits, thus improving over its work against Holy Cross on Saturday. On the other hand, seven men struck out and five men were left on bases, two at third and one at second. Castle played a good game, both in the box and at the bat, allowing but three hits and one base on balls and making a hit which brought in two runs. The feature of the game was the hitting of Clarkson, who made both a two-base and a three-base hit. The outfield also did well, covering much ground and accepting eight chances without an error, Marshall in left field making a particularly good catch in the second inning. The best work for Exeter was done by Cook in the box, who struck out seven men and allowed but one base on balls, and Kemble at second base, who accepted without an error, five chances, some of which were very difficult.

Harvard took the lead in the second inning when Clarkson made a two-base hit and was advanced to third base by Stephenson's single. Quigley then struck out, and Marshall hit to centre field who missed the ball, thus allowing Clarkson to score, Stephenson to reach third, and Marshall to get to second. Castle then brought in both men by a long hit to right field. In the fifth inning Jones made the first score for Exeter. He reached first on an error by Matthews, went to second on Kent's sacrifice, to third on Anson's grounder to Matthews, and was brought in by Hamill's three-base hit. In the sixth, Cook and Heim each scored, Cook going to first on a base on balls, being advanced to second by Tilton's sacrifice, and to the plate by Matthews' wild throw which allowed Heim to go to second. Heim then made Exeter's last score by coming in on Jones' single to left field. In this inning Matthews made a three-base hit and scored on Stephenson's fly to Flock. In the next inning Carr went to first on a base on balls and stole second, third and home, and Clarkson in the eighth made the final run of the game, making a three-base hit to centre field and scoring on Heim's wild throw to third base.
