The second University crew was defeated by the Cornell second by four lengths of open water on Saturday, in a hard-fought race over the two-mile course on Cayuga Lake at Ithaca. The time of the Cornell crew was 11 minutes, 27 2-5 seconds, and that of the University crew, 11 minutes, 47 3-5 seconds.
The race was rowed about six o'clock under perfect weather conditions. At the start the Cornell boat caught the water first and shot ahead, and settled down into a 32 stroke. The University crew pulled up slightly at the half-mile, rowing 29 strokes to the minute. At the mile, however, Cornell was half a length of open water in the lead and had lowered the stroke to 30. The University crew was rowing 26.
In the second mile the crews were retarded by rough water from the excursion boats. At the 1 1-2 mile Cornell was a length ahead. The University crew held at this point and no gain was registered by either boat. Both were now rowing a 30 stroke. At about an eighth of a mile from the finish, however, Cornell raised its stroke to 36 and rapidly ran out three more lengths.
The crews rowed as follows:
Harvard--Stroke, Brownell; 7, Bowditch; 6, Lindsley; 5, Montgomery; 4, Foster; 3, Gardiner; 2, Shepard; bow, Flint; cox., Chase.
Cornell--Stroke, Foote; 7, Lee; 6, Aller; 5, Whitehead; 4, Barnhart; 3, Johnson; 2, Barton; bow, Fisher; cox., Slocum.
