NEW YORK, May 13.--The University lacrosse team defeated Columbia this afternoon on South Field by the score of 3 goals to 1. Neither side scored in the first half. Harvard was at a disadvantage because of being unaccustomed to bare and hard grounds; and owing to the poor stick-work several chances to score were lost. But in the second half the team-work was better and 3 goals were netted. The defense was strong throughout. Hays at goal played a fine game, as did also Kibbey and Outerbridge.
Following was the line-up: Goals--Smith 2, Blaxter, Stewart. Referee--Doyle of the Crescent Athletic Club. Time of halves--twenty minutes. The team will leave New York this morning for the Crescent Athletic Club at Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where it will play that club's team at 3 o'clock this afternoon. During the day the men will be the guests of the club, but they will return to Cambridge tomorrow morning. The Crescent team has the advantage of playing on their own grounds with a team composed almost entirely of veterans. It is one of the finest teams in the country and has already defeated Columbia by the score of 11 goals to 2, therefore the game today should be a very hard one. The University team will line up as in the game with Columbia yesterday. The Crescent team line-up is as follows: g., Allen; p., Moses; c.p., Miller; 1st d., Liffiton; 2d d., Drakely; 3d d., Sherreff; c., Ofiym; 3d a., Jewell; 2d a., Kennedy; 1st a., Wall; o.h., Hardy; i.h., Hodges.
