1904 CLASS CREW CHAMPION

In the crew races on the Charles River yesterday the class championship was won by the Senior crew, and the final interclub class race resulted in a victory for the Weld Sophomores. A strong head wind, making the water in the lower basin very rough, caused slow time.

The first race was between the Weld Sophomores and Seniors. The Newell Juniors had lost three men within the past week and did not enter. At the start, the Sophomores, on the outside course, rowed in better form than their opponents and began immediately to gain. Both crews settled at once into a long, steady stroke, which they kept throughout the race, the Sophomores rowing about 23 strokes to the minute and the Seniors about 26. During the entire race both crews held their form well. The time of the Sophomore crew was 13 minutes and 41 seconds, the Seniors coming in about 30 seconds later, and seven lengths behind.

It was nearly 6.30 o'clock when the race for the class championship was started. The Law School crew held the inside course, by the Beacon street wall, the Seniors came next, then the Juniors, with the Sophomores on the outside. For the first quarter mile the positions of the crews varied little, the Seniors and Sophomores continuing an advantage gained at the start, which grew into a distinct lead by the end of the first half-mile. From this point the Juniors began to raise their stroke and gained on the two leading crews; but here the Seniors, with a stroke of 29 to the minute, spring away and at the bridge had a lead of more than a length. At the finish the Seniors led by about four lengths. The race for second place was a close one between the Juniors and Sophomores, the former, by a final spurt, crossing the line 19 seconds after the winners; the Sophomores finished a half a length behind, and were followed 25 seconds later by the Law School crew. The time made by the Seniors was 12 minutes and 53 seconds.
