The University hockey team defeated Yale on Saturday night at the St. Nicholas Rink, New York, by a score of 5 to 2, in the last of the preliminary games for the intercollegiate championship.
The game was fast and clean, and Harvard won by excellent team-play and superior defense. Although no goal was made until after some minutes of play, the University team had from the start a distinct advantage. The first goal was scored by Townsend, after the puck had been carried the length of the rink by splendid team-work. Three minutes later, Marcus scored the only goal made by Yale in the first half. Wilder and Souther followed with two more goals, and the half ended with the score Harvard 3, Yale 1.
In the second half, the play was at first exceedingly fast, and at times rough, but slackened noticeably in speed toward the close of the game. In this half Wilder and Callaway each scored once for Harvard, and Behr scored for Yale.
The summary: Score--Harvard, 5; Yale, 2. Goals--Wilder 2, Souther, Townsend, Callaway, Marcus, Behr. Referee--William Russell, Hockey Club of New York. Time--20-minute halves. The final game of the intercollegiate series will be played between Harvard and Yale at the St. Nicholas Rink, New York, next Saturday night at 8 o'clock. Having won all of its games this season, the University team will enter the final contest as winner of the preliminary series, with the Yale team, which has lost one game, second.
