UNIVERSITY BASEBALL WORK.

Twenty Men Dropped Yesterday.--Batting Practice Next Tuesday.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The baseball candidates have been holding practice daily this week in three divisions, the first consisting of several small battery squads, the second of three large University squads, and the third of two Freshman squads. Yesterday twenty men were dropped from the University squad.

On Tuesday the next regular practice will be held, and the men will then be divided into first and second squads. On that day batting practice will begin for all men under the direction of Keeler.

The work has been under the supervision of Coach Frantz, assisted by Chesbro and Keeler, and Captain Clarkson. It has been designed to drill the men in the rudiments of the game, and get their arms and bodies in good shape for the first hard practice next week. In pursuance of this policy the men have been given practice in handling ground balls, and in simple pivot and combination plays; practice in base-sliding was held for the first time yesterday. The battery squads, which include both University and Freshman candidates, have been given exceedingly light work, and particular attention has been paid to drilling them in the correct form. The pitchers have not as yet been allowed to attempt swift or curved balls.

Of last year's team, Captain Clarkson, Randall, H. D. Kernan, Stephenson, Matthews, Quigley, and Coburn have already reported, and Carr will join the squad after the hockey season.

The work of the Freshman squad has been almost identical with that of the University squads, only the most elementary points having as yet been touched upon. The first reduction of the squad will take place next week. As yet no material of extraordinary ability has developed, but the standard of the squad as a whole is well up to the average.
