The University basketball team was defeated by Columbia in the Hemenway Gymnasium on Saturday night by the score of 24 to 16. Harvard led the scoring in the first half and at the end of play had one point more than Columbia with the score 9 to 8. Early in the second half, however, Columbia made two long and rather fortunate baskets, giving them a lead that was not again approached by the University team.
Individually the men showed excellent form, the forwards and center playing especially well together, both on the offense and defense. The guards, although at times unsteady, played a hard, fast game, continually forcing the Columbia forwards to rely upon long shoots for the basket.
The line-up was as follows: Score--Columbia, 24; Harvard, 16. Goals from floor--Fisher 4, Rogers 3, O'Connell 2, Hurley 2, Von Sholly, Underwood 4, Grant 2, Randall. Goals from fouls--Underwood 2. Referee--F. Quigg, Trinity. Umpire--H. R. Snyder '05. Timekeeper--F. R. Fitzpatrick '03. Time--20-minute halves. Between the halves of the University game the Freshman team played the Cambridge High School, winning by a score of 23 to 8. A marked improvement was noticeable in the Freshman play both in shooting and in the defensive work of the whole team. Howard and Smith were especially effective, several times shaking off their opponents and shooting difficult baskets. The second basketball team was defeated by the Fall River Signal Corps at Fall River Saturday night by the score of 21 to 9. The game was cleanly played by both teams, the fouls called being principally for violations of minor rules of the game. A weak defense combined with poor basket-shooting, was responsible for the defeat.
