Basketball Work Resumes January 3.

Practice of the University basketball squad will be resumed on Tuesday, January 3, at 7.30 o'clock, in preparation for the first game of the series, to be played with the Naval Reserves, at Newport, on January 9.

The work of the squad thus far during the winter has been fairly satisfactory. The forwards on the first team, however, have as yet not exhibited the scoring ability necessary to win games, and the guards are too frequently drawn down the floor allowing the opposing forwards to pass them. The second team, in spite of frequent changes, has shown marked improvement from the beginning, so that the games with the first team have lately been very close.

Practice for the Freshmen will begin at 7 o'clock on January 3, and will continue regularly every night thereafter. At present 20 men are practicing on the squad and there is a good deal of promising material. A cut will be made about the middle of the month, but the regular team will not be chosen until just before the game with the Yale freshmen in February. The first game after the recess will be played on January 10, either with the Cambridge Latin School or the Rindge Manual Training School.

It has been decided to hold a series of scrub games immediately after the recess, in order to afford opportunity for practice to the men who are not playing on any one of the regular teams. All of these scrub games, which are to be finished before the mid-year period, will probably be played in the afternoon. Fob trophies will be awarded the members of the winning team. Blue books, in which men may sign either as individuals or in team of five will be posted in the Gymnasium and at Leavitt & Peirce's. Rules governing the series will be announced later.
