ADDRESS BY HON. J. W. FOSTER

In Sanders Theatre at 8.--Subject: "What Shall America Do in the Orient?"

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

This evening at 8 o'clock in Sanders Theatre, Hon. John W. Foster, of Washington, will speak under the joint auspices of the Christian Association, the Religious Union and the St. Paul's Society, on "What Shall America Do in the Orient?" R. H. Oveson '05 will preside.

Mr. Foster is one of the most distinguished authorities on questions of diplomacy now living. He was Secretary of State under President Harrison, minister to Mexico from 1873 to 1880, to Russia from 1880 to 1881 and to Spain from 1883 to 1885. In 1891, as special plenipotentiary of the United States, he negotiated reciprocity treaties with Brazil, Spain, Germany and the West Indies. He represented the United States in the Behring Sea arbitration at Paris in 1893, was a member of the Anglo-Canadian Commission in 1898, and presided at the conference of the National Arbitration Committee held in Washington last January. At the invitation of China and Japan he participated in the peace negotiations which closed the recent war between these countries. Mr. Foster studied for one year in the Harvard Law School. He served in the Civil War with the rank of colonel, and was brevetted brigadier-general for bravery. He is the author of "A Century of American Diplomacy" and "American Diplomacy in the Orient."

In his address Mr. Foster will give the results of an extended observation of the actual contact of the West with the East, and his views on the present opportunity for missionary endeavor, in the broad and modern sense.

Mr. Foster will be the guest of honor at a dinner to be given in the Union at 6 o'clock by the executive committee of the Harvard Mission, a new project which will be explained at tonight's meeting. At this dinner President Eliot, several members of the faculty, and a number of undergraduates will be present. Mr. Foster will also be the guest of honor at a luncheon to be given at the Colonial Club by Professor A. B. Hart.

The address will be open to the public, but seats will be reserved for members of the University until 7.55 o'clock.
