Sixty-five men reported last night as candidates for the University and class basketball teams. To this number will probably be added later several names of men who were unable to attend the meeting.
J. W. Gilles 3L. reviewed the history of basketball in the University and emphasized the necessity for all men of athletic ability to support this sport. J. F. Henderson '05, captain of the University team, and W. O. Dapping '05, explained the plans for the year and urged the men to make every possible effort to materialize a winning team.
The candidates will be divided into class squads coached by the class captains and by members of last year's University team. No regular coach will be appointed for the present. The squads will train to develop teams which will take part in the interclass series. The dates for this series were fixed last night as follows: Seniors vs. Juniors, Tuesday, December 6; Sophomores vs. Freshmen, Wednesday, December 7; championship game, between the winners of the above matches, Friday, December 9. Members of the winning team will receive their class basketball numerals and also individual cups offered by T. M. Osborne 84. These cups will be placed on exhibition next week.
At the close of the class series, the University squad will be chosen and every effort will be directed toward preparing the team for its intercollegiate schedule. This schedule, which has lately been revised, will be announced in a few days.
After the Christmas vacation, a scrub series will be held, the winners of which will receive cups offered by the management. The best players in the games of this series will be taken on the University squad.
Any men interested, who were unable to attend the meeting last night, may either report at the Gymnasium at 8 o'clock, or send their names to W. O. Dapping, Drayton 3, today.
