The secret practice of the University football team yesterday afternoon was exceedingly discouraging. The defense proved utterly ineffective and as a result the second eleven had little difficulty in defeating the University team by a score of 10 to 5. Hurley and Meier were both on the field but did not take part in the scrimmage. Randall and Noyes were also out but were given only light work, the latter on account of a cut in the head received in the game with Holy Cross on Saturday. Brill did not report for practice yesterday but will probably be in condition again by tomorrow afternoon.
In the scrimmage a blocked punt gave the ball to the second eleven on the University team's 7-yard line, and in two plays Kersberg went over for a touchdown. Pell fumbled the next kick-off but recovered the ball for the second team on its own 20-yard line. After a few short gains Kerans made a quarterback run around end for 30 yards. The University team then held for downs and Sperry punted to Wilder, who advanced the ball 15 yards. Kerans then made an end run of 15 yards. After a few short gains on line plunges by the second eleven the University team secured the ball on downs on their own 14-yard line. On the next play Mills fumbled and the second eleven got the ball. Several good line attacks were made and Kersberg was again sent over for a touchdown. Prendergast, for the second eleven, ran in the next kick-off from the 15 to the 20-yard line. The second then punted to Starr, who fumbled and Hall fell on the ball for the second team on the University's 40-yard line. After a rush of 10 yards the second eleven was held for downs. The University team then carried the ball 70 yards to the second's 10-yard line. Here the second held for downs and Mason kicked to the 35-yard line. On short gains the University team rushed down the field and Foster went over for a touchdown.
The last open practice will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock. The team will leave for New Haven on Thursday.
