HARD WORK YESTERDAY

The open practice of the University eleven yesterday afternoon was largely devoted to individual instruction relative to the numerous faults which were shown in the Pennsylvania game. Of the men who played on Saturday all reported except Hurley, Mills, Parker, Kernan and Leary. All of these men except Mills have slight injuries which will probably keep them out of the game for several days.

The team was not given the rest yesterday which usually follows a hard game. Under the direction of B. G. Waters '94 and W. H. Lewis '95, the linemen were given hard work in breaking through and blocking. P. Haughton '99 coached the punters, devoting special attention to Sperry and Nichols. The centres were given instruction by H. Russell '95, and the ends by N. Cabot '97.

In the short scrimmage which followed the preliminary work, the first and second elevens each made one touchdown. Brill kicked off for the first team to the 5-yard line. The second team was unable to gain and punted to its own 40-yard line. From here the first team carried the ball by rushes, averaging 7 yards each, to the 1-yard line, and Reynolds went over for the touchdown. Brill kicked an easy goal. Barney scored the second team's touchdown, securing the ball on a fumble on the first eleven's 45-yard line.

The work in the scrimmage was hard and aggressive but was again marred by frequent fumbles. The first team's backs made fair gains consistently but were unable to secure long distances as they were unsteady on their feet. Cunniff played centre and Parkinson was for the first time given a trial at left tackle. Meier was back in the game again at right tackle, and in the scrimmage replaced Derby, who was in the line-up only during signal practice.

F. H. Schoenfuss '05 reported yesterday for the first time as a candidate for a guard position.
