The practice of the University football squad yesterday afternoon was ragged, and entirely lacking in the life and snap which characterized the first week of regular play. This poor showing, however, was undoubtedly due in a large measure to the absence in the line-up of many of the regular first team players and substitutes. Nesmith, Brill, Hanley and Frazer did not report owing to recent slight injuries, and Nichols, Oveson, Reynolds and Osborn, who have been out of the game for the past few days, although on the field again, did not engage in the scrimmage.
D. R. Sortwell '07, quarterback on last year's Freshman team and Jones, substitute end on the University team in 1901 were out for the first time. J. Parkinson '06, University centre last year, was given his first preliminary work.
The scrimmage yesterday was characterized by much inexcusable fumbling, especially in the handling of punts. The backs failed to follow their interference, depending on individual work to secure their gains. The first team scored two touchdowns against the second in a slow and uninteresting half, about 15 minutes in length. Both touchdowns were made by Wendell, the first at the beginning of the half on a line-plunge from the 8-yard line through right tackle, the second on a 45-yard run, after breaking through outside right tackle. No attempt was made to kick the goals.
The following graduates were on the field assisting Coach Wrightington: F. D. Cochrane '99, R. W. P. Brown '98, C. B. Marshall '04, R. P. Kernan '03, J. S. Lawrence '01, J. Dunlop '96, E. H. Greene '02 and N. Cabot '97.
