First Services in Appleton-Chapel.

The opening religious service of the College year was held last evening in Appleton Chapel. Rev. Professors Peabody and Fenn conducted the devotional exercises, and Rev. Professor Francis Brown delivered the sermon, speaking from the text: "Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty." He was followed by Bishop Lawrence, who spoke briefly on religion as part of the normal and natural life, neglect of which by the college man must mean irreparable loss. Indifference to religion by the college man is due, he said, not so much to doubts or to sin as to the habit of drifting.

President Eliot then spoke on the place in the University of the Chapel, which, he said, teaches a unique lesson in Christian unity. For twenty-three years there has been no question here of ecclesiastical polity or government, no ritual--none of the things which create religious division. Many people may ask whether religion can remain where these things do not exist. What remains is freedom, the very breath of the University life! But more, "Here abideth faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love." Religion, as the prophet Micah defined it, remains here. "What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God?" Here in the Chapel we cease to watch for the execution of the next task, or for the winning of the next pleasure, and we look up to the spacious firmament on high. Here we may all come for a few moments to walk with God You have nothing to gain by coming to the Chapel of Harvard College except the gain in faith, hope and love. You can come here under no other commandment than this: "Be still and know that I am God."
