Except during the last ten minutes of play the work of the University hockey team in practice yesterday afternoon was wretched. In the first half, luring thirty minutes of slow and listless work, the first team defeated the second by a score of 5 goals to 1, owing mainly to the weak defense of the second team. The only encouraging feature of the half was the fact that, at times, the men showed signs of playing together. In the second half, the forwards were interchanged, the first team men playing on the second. For the first thirty minutes of play in this half, the lifeless work of the forwards combined with the weak defense of the second team backs was unable to hold the second team forwards, who played spiritedly and together, and scored 6 goals to 2. In the last minutes of play, however, the University forwards developed the only real team-work that they have exhibited this year and scored four goals in six minutes. Macleod, who has been sick since before the Christmas recess, was on the ice and took part in the practice for a few minutes. Kernan, who has been out of the game since last Monday as the result of a slight injury, was on the ice, but took no part in the play.
