The University basketball team defeated the Princeton team in the Hemenway Gymnasium Saturday evening by the score of 17 to 8. At the end of the first half, in which the play was fast and clean on both sides, the score stood 13 to 3 in favor of Harvard. The play in the second half, however, was at times unnecessarily rough and many fouls were called on both sides for pushing and holding. Grant was slightly injured in the latter part of this half and was replaced by K. Smith.
Harvard tried with great success a new style of play, in keeping the two guards always back; and although the Princeton team was able to pass the ball accurately in their own territory, they almost invariably lost the ball before a shoot for the basket could be obtained. In covering on the defense the University team was far superior to Princeton and the inability of the Princeton players to follow their men closely was directly responsible for much of the scoring.
Grant and Underwood played well together in the first half, but toward the eno slackened in their speed. Randall, at center, covered his opponent much better than usual, but on the defense was still too quick to break away. The guards played throughout an excellent game, both in blocking and in passing to the forwards.
The line-up was as follows: Score--Harvard, 17; Princeton, 8. Goals--Grant 3, Randall 2, Underwood 2, Batten, Ely. Goals from fouls--McCoy 4, Bigelow 3. Fouls--Gring 5, Randall 5, Bigelow 2, Grant, K. Smith, Vanderbilt 5, Batten 2, McCoy, Ely. Referee--F. B. Barnes, Cambridge Y. M. C. A. Umpire--A. E. West. Timekeepers--H. R. Snyder '05, and Bowyer, of Princeton. Time--20-minute halves.
