GALES FERRY, June 8.--The Yale University crew showed great improvement in its work this morning. The catch was much quicker and there was far more life in the boat. In the afternoon, however, the university crew was again defeated by the freshmen in a one and one-quarter mile race. The two boats took a racing start and were even until towards the end when the freshmen spurted and won by a short distance.
Several changes have been made in the orders because of the repeated defeats of the university crew by the freshmen. Whittier has been taken from the freshman crew and put in at 5 in the university boat; Stubbs has been moved to 3; and Coffin has been dropped to the four-oared. The orders are now as follows:
University--Stroke, Bogue; 7, Cross; 6, Miller; 5, Whittier; 4, Judson; 3, Stubbs; 2, Daly; bow, Waterman; cox., Minor.
Freshman--Stroke, Whitney; 7, Weeks; 6, McMahon; 5, Chase; 4, Scott; 3, Morse; 2, Swensen; bow, Hecksher, cox, Muzzy.
