The resignation of Professor Ira N. Hollis from his position on the Harvard Athletic Committee was accepted yesterday by the Board of Overseers. The Board also approved of the Athletic Committee for 1903-1904, as submitted to it by the Corporation:
Faculty members, Professor H.S. White '73, Professor A.C. Coolidge '87 and Professor A.P. Andrew; graduate members, T.N. Perkins '91, Dr. E.H. Nichols '86, and N.W. Bingham '95; undergraduate members, J.A. Burgess '04, H. Dillingham '04, and J.P. Bowditch '05.
Of this committee, Professors White, Coolidge, and T.N. Perkins are the only old members; and Professor Coolidge the only member who has served more than one year.
Professor Hollis first joined the Athletic Committee in 1895 and was elected chairman in 1897. In 1896 he acted as chairman for Professor Beale, who was sick during the whole year. Previous to Professor Beale, Professor Ames had been chairman for four years. When Professor Hollis joined the committee, all athletics took place on Holmes Field, Soldiers Field being nothing more than a marsh. In 1897, the year that the track was built, all athletics were moved to Soldiers Field. During his regime, most of the field has been drained and graded, and the Cage, the Lodge, the Fence, the Newell Gate, and the Boathouse built. With the building of the Stadium, and the further extension of the grading next fall, Professor Hollis's plans for the improvement of Soldiers Field will be almost complete.
J.A. Burgess, one of the Junior members of the committee, and president of the Junior class, prepared for college at Exeter. In his Freshman year he was captain of his Freshman football team. In the spring he rowed on a Weld graded crew. For the last two years he has been a member of the University football squad. He is vice-president of the Union for the year 1903.
H. Dillingham '04, prepared for college in Hawaii. He rowed on his Freshman crew and last year rowed bow on the Weld graded crew that won from Annapolis. This year he has been a prominent candidate for the University crew, and is at present stroking the four-oar.
J.P. Bowditch, the Sophomore member of the committee, prepared for college at Milton Academy. Last year he was substitute end on the Freshman football team and in the spring rowed on the second Weld Freshman crew, that won the Freshman class races. This year, he rowed for a time on the first graded crew, but had to stop owing to an injury to his back.
The Board of Overseers also voted to concur with the Corporation in electing R.W. Willson, Ph.D., professor of astronomy; in reappointing O.C. Wendell, A.M., assistant professor of hygiene; in appointing W.E. Castle, A.M., assistant professor of zoology, all for five years from September 1, 1903.
The following preachers to the University were reappointed for one year from September 1, 1903: Rev. Francis Brown, D.D., LL.D., Rev. Floyd W. Tompkins, D.D., and Professor W.W. Fenn. Dr. Lyman Abbott and Dr. Henry Van Dyke were appointed preachers to the University for next year.
Other appointments approved of were as follows:
C.R. Sanger, Ph.D., director of the Chemical Laboratory; G.W. Pierce, Ph.D., and Theodore Lyman, Ph.D., instructors in physics for one year, from September, 1903; H.A. Torrey, Ph.D., instructor in chemistry.
