HARVARD, 4; COLUMBIA, 1.

University Nine Wins in a Slow Game. Batting Continues Weak.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University nine defeated Columbia in a slow and uninteresting game yesterday by the score of 4 to 1. Neither side was able to hit the ball effectively, and this, together with the absence of any sensational plays, made the game tedious to watch.

The University team found difficulty in making three hits against Tyler, who, although not a first rate pitcher, had a puzzling underhand delivery. Ten men struck out, and every attempt to bunt ended in failure. In the field, two errors were made, one by Carr on a grounder, and one by Coburn on an overthrow to first. For the most part, however, the fielding was very satisfactory, Carr and Coburn, with the above exceptions, making several good throws.

The base-running, as a whole, was good, but was marred by Carr's unnecessary interference with the ball on first base. Coburn pitched very steadily, striking cut nine men, and giving but one base on balls. Quigley caught well in the absence of Kernan, who is recovering from a slight strain, but at the bat, he proved very unreliable.

Harvard made all four runs in the first two innings, as follows: Randall, the first man up, made a home run. Matthews received a base on balls, took two bases on an error by Joyce and scored on another error by the same fielder. Coburn opened the second inning by knocking a swift ground ball to Goodman, which was not fielded cleanly, allowing him to get his base. He was forced to second by Coolidge, who received a base on balls, reached third on a grounder by Stephenson and scored on a single by Matthews. Stephenson in the mean time had stolen second base, and also came home on Matthews's hit.

Columbia's only run was made in the seventh inning, when Frambach made a three-base hit and scored on a wild pitch.
