The University baseball team will play its second game with Georgetown on Soldiers Field this afternoon at 3 o'clock.
The first game of the Georgetown series was played on April 18 at Washington, and was won by Harvard by the narrow margin of 3 to 0. The game was almost entirely a pitcher's battle between Clarkson and Drill, in which the former had the advantage, striking out thirteen men, and allowing but two base hits. Drill also pitched well, holding Harvard down to three safe hits, and giving but one base on balls.
Georgetown has played two games with Yale, the first of which resulted in a tie, 5 to 5, and the second, played last Tuesday at New Haven, in a victory for Yale, 9 to 0. In the last game, Yale won by ability to hit safely at timely moments, and through the effectiveness of Bowman and Patton in the box. In the Princeton series, Georgetown won one game, 6 to 5, and lost the other, 8 to 6. The greatest weakness of the team has been their inability to bat effectively with men on bases.
Since the Princeton game, the University nine has overcome many of its most glaring defects. The base-running, so slow and stupid in Saturday's game, has received special attention this week, and is now much more intelligent. Although unreliable, the batting has lately shown some improvement, especially at critical times. A tendency to hit too hard, and strike at bad balls has been in evidence. But with persistent coaching, these faults are being gradually overcome. R. Kernan is doing good work behind the bat, having shown marked improvement both in catching pitched balls and foul flies.
Clarkson will pitch in today's game and, as R. Kernan has gone with the track team to New York to compete in the intercollegiate track games. Stephenson will catch, Carr taking the latter's place at right field.
