From the minute bandmaster George started his cohorts from the Union on Saturday morning until the last subway car deposited its load at Harvard square that night some three hundred and fifty Seniors spent the time at the most enjoyable field day ever held by a class in the University. After seeing Boston from the seats of six of the Elevated's finest and a voyage over the turbulent Atlantic under the care of that expert pilot and store-keeper Captain Dixon, the picnic party reached the Island only a little after the time scheduled in the CRIMSON.
Arrived at Misery, the capable Refreshment Committee at once set about serving the lunch, so that the demands of all comers were quickly catered to. A little impromptu baseball practice was indulged in about the lunch counter, but it was found necessary to seat the crowd as the ice-cream could not be handed around in this delightful manner.
Under the charge of Clark and J. D. Clark the track games were brilliantly run off, and some of the records made, especially that in the invitation dash, make our chances for the dual games much brighter.
Baseball followed and several strong nines found occupation on the various diamonds. The scheduled game between the Phi Beta Kappas and the Sports was very close until the pitcher of the Sports weakened, allowing the Phi Betas to win by the score of 20 to 18.
A slight collation at the bar ended the entertainment, and to the tune of "Johnnie Comes Marching Home" and led by Captain Knowles of the nine, the men marched to the wharf and were taken aboard the "King Philip." Here a third meal awaited them, which was followed by some impromptu singing and a few speeches on the part of the Information Committee; but before the rest of the carefully prepared programme could be run off the steamer struck the wharf with a dull thud and the field day was over.
At a meeting of the Field Day Committee last night the following numbers were given out as the successful ones in the poster raffie: 1, 934; 2, 724; 3, 228; 4, 984.
