HARVARD, 6; PENNSYLVANIA, O.

The University nine defeated the Pennsylvania team on Saturday by a score of 6 to 0, in a game that was rather uninteresting from a spectacular point of view. As neither team was able to hit the opposing pitcher, a pitchers' battle resulted, in which Clarkson proved to be far superior to either Devlin or Groves. The foul strike rule was used, making the game short.

One feature of the game was very discouraging, almost disgraceful, and that was the base-running. Five men were thrown out on bases, and in the last inning, the slowness of Stillman and R. Kernan, cost two runs. In the first inning, too, just at the time when a run was imminent, Matthews closed the inning by poor judgment in attempting to steal second.

Clarkson pitched splendidly from first to last, showing better form even than in the Brown and Cornell games. He not only struck out fourteen men and gave but one hit, but throughout the game, allowed but one man to reach third base and only two to reach second. R. Kernan caught steadily and made two brilliant catches of foul flies. The infield was hardly tried out to any extent but with the exception of an error by Randall, the few chances that were offered were accepted cleanly and accurately.

Both Devlin and Groves pitched a steady game, holding the University team down to seven hits. Neither one, however, had enough speed to excuse the weak batting on Harvard's part. A bad tendency to hit at the first ball was evident, resulting in high flies or easy infield grounders.

Up to the sixth inning neither side had scored and only one man had reached second base. In the sixth, however, Carr got his base on an error, and, reaching second on a single by Coolidge, scored on Matthews's two-base hit, which advanced Coolidge to third. Clarkson then cleared the bases with a powerful home-run drive to deep centre field. The other two runs were made in the ninth inning, Clarkson reached first on a pitcher's baulk and, after getting to second on Stephenson's single, and to third on H. Kernan's sacrifice hit, came home on a double steal with Stephenson, who was advanced to third by the play, and later scored the sixth run on an error by Cariss.
