Batting Shows Some Improvement.--Andover not Strong.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The baseball team defeated Andover yesterday by a score of 9 to 0, winning through timely massing of hits, together with costly errors by Andover. Although thirteen hits were made against through thirteen hits were made against a pitcher of no more than ordinary ability, six of them resulting in eight of the nine runs, the batting cannot yet be called satisfactory, for in three innings, with two out and a man on third base, the batter failed to advance the runner. Bunting, too, was deplorably weak. The fielding was fast, with the exception of two inexcusable fumbles of grounders by Carr, and the muff of an easy outfield fly by H. Kernan. Coburn showed great unsteadiness in his pitching, letting up noticeably after the first inning and giving six bases on balls. Stillman, who replaced him in the last three innings, proved no steadier. R. Kernan caught well, and threw to bases with accuracy, catching one man at second and one at first.

Andover played with fair steadiness, with the exception of three errors by the right fielder, and two fumbles by the short-stop. At the bat, however, the men seemed unable to hit with any certainly, the four hits that were made being well scattered.

Coolidge, the first man at bat made the first run, when, after receiving a base on balls and gaining second on an error, he stole third and came in on another error. In the sixth inning Clarkson made a two-base hit and Stephenson singled. R. Kernan scoring both with a base hit. H. Kernan opened the next inning with a safe hit, which was fumbled by Alworth, allowing the runner to reach third. Matthews got a base on balls, and, stealing second, came home together with Kernan on Stephenson's hit. Stephenson stole second and scored on a single by R. Kernan, who reached second on the throw to the plate, and made the sixth run on a hit by Coburn. Two more runs were scored in the eighth inning, when Coolidge singled, and Matthews reached first on an error by Alworth, both crossing the plate on Clarkson's two-base hit after a clever double steal.
