The graduates' performance of "Eastward, Ho!", an Elizabethan comedy by Jonson, Marston and Chapman, was given last evening in Brattle Hall by the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Considering the difficulties to be overcome in presenting an Elizabethan play before a modern audience, the performance was in every way praiseworthy and evidenced careful training and observance of details.
The plot centers about the, matrimonial ventures of the two daughters of Touchstone, the Goldsmith, and his two apprentices, the idle Quicksilver and the faithful Golding. J. D. Williams '03, as Touchstone, was noteworthy both for his acting and the delivery of his lines, in a part that was perhaps the most satisfactory in the play. J. P. Hoguet '04, as Quicksilver, handled intelligently a difficult part, although his acting was superior to his enunciation. The female roles were well done and the minor parts were without exception excellently taken. The tavern scene, in which R. S. Wallace '04 as the sea captain terrifies the tapster by smoking the newly-introduced Virginia tobacco, was especially amusing.
The scenery was in keeping and the costumes artistic and true to fact. Mr. John Malone and the entire direction of the somewhat unique production.
The first public performance will be given in Brattle Hall tonight at 8.15 o'clock. The dates of the remaining performances are as follows: Second Cambridge performance, at Brattle Hall, April 16; Boston performance, at the Bijou Theatre, April 17. Tickets are on sale at Thurston's and Herrick's, or may be had from R. S. Wallace, 63 Thayer Hall.
