COLBY EASILY DEFEATED

The University baseball team defeated Colby on Saturday, in its first game this season, by a score of 15 to 3. With one exception, the University team made their runs by a massing of hits in the third inning, and a series of fielding errors by Colby in the sixth inning. Colby scored two of her three runs on a timely hit by Keene in the fourth inning.

The playing of the University team in the field was good, with the exception of one inexcusable error by Randall who dropped an easy throw. All the men fielded cleanly, and threw with considerable accuracy. The batting of the team was only fair, although the opposing pitchers were not above average ability. The hits were, however, advantageously massed at opportune moments. In this department, Matthews did the best individual work, making four safe hits out of six chances at the bat including a three-base and a two-base hit. The base-running of the men showed great improvement over their work in practice. Fourteen bases were stolen among which may be mentioned a well executed double steal in the sixth inning. Of the pitchers, Coburn, who replaced Stillman during the last four innings, had fair control. He succeeded in striking out three men and allowed but two hits. Stillman, although he had perhaps better control, lacked speed. Behind the bat, R. P. Kernan showed marked superiority over his form of last year, allowing no passed balls, and assisting in a putout at first base in the fourth inning, by a very accurate throw. His batting on the other hand was weak.

The Colby team played a loose game in the field, and were in general unable to hit the pitching of either Stillman or Coburn. Their few hits were, however, fairly well massed.

In the first inning, Carr reached first on a safe hit, was forced to second by Randall's base on balls, stole third, and scored the first run of the season on Stillman's infield hit. Matthews opened the third inning with a base hit and scored on the fumbling of Randall's hit. Randall was advanced to third by a dropped fly, and reached the plate on an infield hit by Skilton. Daly reached first by a base on balls, thus filling the bases; and H. Kernan's hit brought in two runs. Matthews's three-base hit, followed by Randall's single, brought in three more runs, which closed the scoring for the third inning.

No more runs were made until the sixth inning, when Matthews made a base hit, and after stealing second and reaching third on an infield error, scored the tenth run on Clarkson's infield hit. Randall, who had reached third, stole home on an attempt to put out Coburn at second, and Coburn stole third on the throw to the plate. Murphy followed with a base on balls, and scored together with Coburn on an error by the third baseman. Another base on balls, an Infield error, and Matthews's two-base hit brought in the two final runs.

Colby made two runs in the third inning on base hits by Cowing and Keene. In the eighth inning, Cowing scored the third run on Teague's being hit by a pitched ball.
