UNSTEADY WORK IN PRACTICE.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

For the first time in secret practice the second yesterday scored against the University eleven. The play was marred not only by slowness of the line, but also by fumbling and off-side play, the first eleven making several fumbles and being four times penalized for off-side. Once the second threw the University team back 5 yards, and made first down several times. Although the line-up lasted for 35 minutes, the University eleven was able to score only three touchdowns.

Randall and Nichols, the only two prominent players absent from Monday's practice, were out yesterday, but neither went into the scrimmage. Sugden yesterday stayed in at center throughout the practice, and Carrick was tried at right guard when A. Marshall left the line-up. LeMoyne has a good deal of practice in punting, but most of his kicks did not carry far. For the second eleven, Carroll and Cruger played well, and on the offensive the former was instrumental in opening holes for several gains by his team.

After only five minutes of signals, the University eleven lined up for a scrimmage against the second. The first eleven received the ball from the kick-off and rushed it down the field by short gains. Hurley scoring the first touchdown on an 8-yard plunge through the line. Fumbling and off-side play combined to give the second team its touchdown. The second got the ball on a fumble on the University's 25-yard line, and aided by two off-side plays which yielded 5 and 3 yards respectively in penalties, carried it over the University's line, Lehmann scoring from the 3-yard line. Means made the second touchdown for the University eleven on a play through the line from the 45-yard line to which point the ball had been rushed from the kick-off. The University eleven then rushed the ball from the kick-off to the second's 35-yard line. Mills broke through for 25 yards, but dropped the ball when tackled by Elkins on the 10-yard line; C. B. Marshall, however, picked up the ball and made the third touchdown. Marshall kicked goals after all three touchdowns made by the first eleven.

Among the coaches on the field yesterday were: R. D. Kernan '03, D. Dean '92, J. Dunlop '96, B. G. Waters '94, R. W. Emmons '95, G. W. Bouve '98.
