FAIRLY GOOD PRACTICE.

Preliminary Work Slow; But Fighting Spirit Shown In the Line-up.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The work of the University football squad yesterday consisted of long preliminary practice followed by a short signal practice and a ten-minute line-up. Although the preliminary work was slow and showed the effects of the day after a game, the playing which followed in the line-up was sharp and full of spirit. Captain Marshall could not join in the practice owing to a wrenched knee, and Schoelkopf and Hanley were given only light work, as the former is at present out of condition and Hanley has a lame shoulder. Bowditch was cut for the first time and joined in the line-up. Nichols was tried at punting, and Mills was put in at fullback.

In the line-up the first team received the kick-off on their twenty-five yard line, and then by consistent gains through both sides of the line advanced the ball to the second's fifteen yard line. Here the ball was given to the second, which was unable to gain, and punted. The first team chiefly by gains through the line carried the ball back to the twenty-five yard line when time was called.

The most encouraging feature of the play was the ability of the centre men to open up the second's line, although it was strengthened by several old players: E. H. Greene '02 at centre, C. H. Barnard 2L. at right guard, and R. Lawrence '02 at right tackle. For the rest the second line was too light to afford much opposition.

Among those who assisted Coach Cranston and Captain Marshall in the coaching were R. Lawrence '02, C. H. Barnard 2L., R. W. P. Brown '98, E. H. Greene '02, J. Dunlop '96.

The line-up: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Burgess, l.e.  r.e., Sawyer Parkinson, l.t.  r.t., Lawrence, Lehmann Shea, l.g.  r.g., Barnard, Coburn Carrick, c.  c., Greene, Pell A. Marshall, r.g.  l.g., McFadden Knowlton, r.t.  l.t., Squires Bowditch, r.e.  l.e., Upton Noyes, q.b.  q.b., Elkins Lindsay, l.h.b.  r.h.b., Snyder Hurley, r.h.b.  l.h.b., Leonard Mills, f.b.  f.b., Meier
