The Visiting Committee of the Department of Philosophy, composed of R. H. Dana '74, G. B. Dorr '74, R. C. Cabot '89, J. Lee '83, T. W. Ward '66, and R. C. Robbins '92, has collected about $65,000 for the proposed new philosophy building. This building will be known as "Emerson Hall" and will be erected on the present site of Dean Shaler's house, thus forming a quadrangle with Sever Hall and Robinson Hall.

The general structure of the building will be modelled on the drawings made by A. W. Longfellow '76, although the plans will probably undergo some alternations before they are finally accepted. The hall will consist of three stories, and will be constructed entirely of red brick. On the first floor will be several small recitation rooms and one large lecture hall with a seating capacity of four hundred; the rest of the floor will be taken up by a philosophical library, comprising, in addition to the regular text-books, an extensive collection of philosophical works. The second story will contain several seminary rooms for advanced work; about one-half of this floor will be occupied by the educational and socialogical departments. The entire third floor will be used for a psychological laboratory; besides one large room where work of a general character will be done, there will be fifteen sections, each of which will be specially equipped for certain specific branches of the subject.

The committee wishes to raise $125,000 for this building and hopes to be able to lay the corner-stone on May 25, of this year, the one-hundredth anniversary of Emerson's birth.
