RED TOP, June 16.--The day has been cloudy with a fresh breeze. The crews made an early start and Higginson took Shuebruk's place for a while in the University eight. Gregg and Smith alternated at bow in the four-oar. The Freshman crew took short stretches, ending with a half-mile on time. Tew went in at two.

In the afternoon Brownell took McGrew's place at stroke in the University crew and James went in at seven, Bancroft taking his place at bow. The crew then went over the four-mile course upstream for the first time since leaving Cambridge. Wind and tide were in their favor. The stroke was slow and for over a mile and a half the crew did not row hard. In the last half mile, however, the stroke was raised from 30 to 36. Time, 22m., 20s. McGrew then took Brownell's place and the crew paddled several short stretches.
