Crew Goes Over Course

RED TOP, June 12.--The weather today was clear with a slight wind blowing up river. Both crews got into the water about half past nine. Bancroft is well again and took his regular place at seven, and Francis moved back to three in the four. The other positions were Stroke, Brownell; 2, Derby; bow, Smith; but later Gregg was tried for a time in Derby's place at 2.

The University crew rowed downstream by fours for a mile and a half. The coaches, Dr. Hutchinson and Mr. Higginson laid especial stress on the necessity of the men gripping the oars firmly and sweeping them through the water. On the way back the crew rowed a half mile at 30 to the minute but the boat stopped noticeably between strokes. The crews returned at 11 and the men who had examinations took them in the tent. In the late afternoon, under favorable conditions, the University crew went over the four-mile course. The boat was still unsteady, tending to fall over to starboard and hitching somewhat between strokes. McGrew showed ability to put up the stroke, raising it at one period to 36. In the last half mile the crew steadied down and were rowing in their best form at the finish. The men finished strong. The time was 23m., 8s.
