PRINCETON, N. J., June 11.--The University nine was defeated by Princeton this afternoon in a game played in the rain by the score of 3 to 0. Princeton made three runs in the first two innings, chiefly owing to Clarkson's unsteadiness. During a hard pour in the seventh Princeton added four more runs which were not counted, as the game was called before the inning could be completed.
The batting for Harvard was very weak, only two hits being made against a pitcher who showed no unusual ability. Individually the fielding was the best of the season. Clarkson gave seven bases on balls, but otherwise was effective, allowing only two hits. At the bat he made one of Harvard's two hits. Kernan made a brilliant catch of a foul in the first inning, but was weak in backing up. He caught two of the three men who tried to steal second base. The other men had little to do. Matthews made the only other base-hit.
In the first inning Steinwender hit a grounder to Skilton who threw wild to first. Cosgrave drew a base on balls, and both men were advanced one base on a passed ball, Steinwender scoring on Pearson's long fly into the out field. In the second inning Davis and Wells got bases on balls. Green's two-base hit scored Davis, and Wells came home on a sacrifice by Stevens. This ended the scoring although Princeton had men on bases in every inning but one. Harvard filled the bases in the fourth but could not score.
