Qualifying and First Round at Garden City.--Egans Only Harvard Glen Left.

GARDEN CITY, L. I., May 8.--The individual playing in the intercollegiate golf tournament was begun here today with the qualifying and first rounds of 18 holes each. Of the 16 men who qualified, six were Harvard men, namely, H. C. Egan, Proal, Brown, Lindsley, Murdock and W. E. Egan. Richardson just failed to qualify. In the first round both Egans won their matches, but Brown, Lindsley, Murdock and Proal were defeated. No very good scores were made, Wilson's 79 in the medal play being the best of the day.

The qualifying round was played this morning. The following sixteen men qualified: Wilson (P), 79; Hitchcock (Y), 83; Poole (P), 83; Bates (C), 83; Reinhardt (P), 85; H. C. Egan (H), 85; Proal (H), 85; Hill (Pa), 85; Campbell (Y), 85; Jackson (C), 85; Murdock (H), 85; Brown (H), 86; Lindsley (H), 87; McFarland (Pa), 87; Slosson (C), 88; W. E. Egan (H), 90.

The first round was finished this afternoon, and resulted as follows: Wilson (P) beat Lindsley (H), 6 up and 5 to play; W. E. Egan (H) beat Bates (C), 2 up; Hitchcock (Y) beat Jackson (C), 3 up and 2 to play; Reinhardt (P) beat Murdock (H), 4 up and 2 to play; McFarland (Pa) beat Campbell (Y), 3 up and 2 to play; H. C. Egan (H) beat Brown (H), 4 up and 2 to play; Slosson (C) beat Hill (Pa), 2 up and 1 to play; Poole (P) beat Proal (H), 4 up and 2 to play.

This leaves for the second round which will be played today: H. C. Egan (H), W. E. Egan (H), Hitchcock (Y), Wilson (P), Reinhardt (P), Poole (P), McFarland (Pa) and Slosson (C).
