The first Newell graded crew which is to race the Cornell second and Syracuse crews at Ithaca on Friday, has shown a little improvement since the graded crew races about two weeks ago.
The crew is now well together, but there is a general tendency to shorten the stroke, especially in the longer stretches. For a quarter or a half mile, the work is satisfactory, but there seems to be a lack of stamina and endurance in several positions in the boat which shows in the long stretches.
The crew will leave for Ithaca tomorrow night by rail, arriving there about 9 o'clock Thursday morning, so that they may have some practice on Lake Cayuga before the race.
Elaborate preparations have been made for the regatta. Seats for a large observation train are being sold not only in Ithaca, but also in Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and elsewhere. The Cornell musical clubs will give a concert on Friday evening.
The order of the Newell crew is as follows:
Stroke, Boardman; 7, Swaim; 6, Henderson; 5, Haycock; 4, Foster; 3, Morris; 2, Stone; bow, Low; cox., Stokes.
