SECOND WELD FRESHMEN WIN

First Weld Finishes Second, First Newell Taking Third Place.

In the Freshman club races yesterday the three Weld crews were victorious. Although on the whole the Newell crews were more finished than the Weld, they lacked the strong leg drive essential to a winning boat. The crews from both clubs showed very fair ability and should furnish material for a good Freshman crew.

The conditions for the race were very favorable, the wind being light and blowing across the course, the water calm, and the tide running out.

At the start the first two Newell crews got the jump on the other crews and kept their lead up to the quarter mile. The first two Weld crews, about half a length behind, were absolutely even. In the rear the third Weld led the third Newell by a few feet.

As the crews neared the Harvard bridge the first Weld gained rapidly on the Newell crews, passing the second Newell and tieing the first Newell. By a sharp spurt at the bridge, however, the first Newell again got the lead, with the first Weld and second Newell half a length behind, tied for second place. A length and a half to the rear, the third Weld led the third Newell by a length.

A half mile from the finish the first four crews were almost even with a slight advantage to the first Newell and second Weld. Then the second Weld spurted, passed the first Newell, and led by half a length. Fifteen strokes from the finish the first Weld overhauled the first Newell, only being beaten three-quarters of a length by the second Weld. The shells of the first and second crews of both clubs were overlapping at the finish. The third crews finished two lengths of open water behind the second Newell, the third Weld winning by only a few feet.

The time was 10m. 3 1-2s.

The order in which the crews finished was as follows:

Second Weld, first Weld, first Newell, second Newell, third Weld, third Newell.

Following is the order of the winning crews:

First Weld--Stroke, Heard; 7, Lawson (captain), 6, McLeod; 5, Nice; 4, Lewis; 3, Eaves; 2, Ober; bow, Johnson; cox., Chase.

Second Weld--Stroke, Richmond; 7, Eayrs; 6, Joy; 5, Abbot; 4, Hall; 3, Bowditch; 2, Winsor; bow, Crocker; cox., Whitney.

First Newell--Stroke, Tew (captain); 7, Swaim; 6, Lamson; 5, Mills; 4, James; 3, Locke; 2, Webster; bow, Mason; cox., Green.

The twenty-two men retained for the Freshman squad will begin work under Coach Bancroft this afternoon.
