The first meeting in the fencing tournament for the championship of New England, held Saturday night in the gymnasium of the Boston Athletic Association, was won by the B. A. A. team with a total score of eight points. Providence was second with five points. Harvard third with four, and Worcester fourth, with one point.
Every man fenced three bouts with one representative of every other team, making a total number of nine bouts fenced by each team.
The individual score of the Harvard team was as follows: F. W. Hitchings 01 won from Shepherd of Worcester, and lost to Butterworth of Providence and H. Clapp 1D., of the B. A. A.; F. W. Burchenal '02 won from Flotcher of Providence, and Lawrence of Worcester, but lost to Brownell of the B. A. A.: R. M. Henderson '02 won from Heath of Worcester, and lost to Gledding of Providence, and Allen of the B. A. A.
The next meeting will be held at Worcester on February 16, and the deciding match at Providence, at a date to be announced later.
