TEST OF DEFENSIVE WORK

Second Eleven Unable to Gain Through University Line

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University football practice yesterday was used largely as a test of the team's defensive work. A great deal of the time was first spent in coaching the men individually and in drilling the ends, backs and linemen in separate groups. After this the first and second elevens lined up for a short scrimmage. On the whole the playing of the team was a trifle better than it was the day before. In the line there was more speed and aggressiveness and the men played better together. On the offense, the ground gaining was consistent, but never brilliant. The tackle-back formation was used almost entirely.

Bowditch was back at right end for the first time in nearly two weeks and played a hard game. Shea was again tried at left tackle and Whitwell was put in Barnard's place at right guard. Both made a strong showing.

Immediately after the kickoff, the first team secured the ball on downs at the 30 yard line. Shea gained 5 yards, Kernan made the same distance around the end, Knowlton an Graydon advanced 8 yards in three plays, the former went through right guard for 5 yards and again for 6 yards, and from the 1 yard line Graydon made the only touchdown of the afternoon. During the remainder of the game the second eleven was allowed to keep the ball nearly the whole time, but was unable to make any impression on the first eleven's line.

The teams lined up as follows: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Clark, l.e.  r.e., Goodhue Shea, l.t.  r.t., Dodge A. Marshall, l.g.  r.g., Sugden King, c.  c., Force Whitwell, r.g.  l.g., Wilder Knowlton, r.t.  l.t., O'Connell Bowditch, r.e.  l.e., Littig C. Marshall, q.b.  q.b., Parker Kernan, l.h.b.  r.h.b., McGlensey Putnam, r.h.b.  l.h.b., Trott Graydon, f.b.  f.b., Piper
