FIRST FOOTBALL GAME.

Harvard Plays Williams Today at 3.30.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The football team will play Williams on Soldiers Field at 3.30 this afternoon. With only a little over a week's practice, and the failure of many of the prominent men to come out until late, it has been hardly possible to form a representative eleven. The squad has had three days of actual play, and consequently has developed no team work, but the preliminary practice has corrected some of the individual faults of the players, and it is upon the individual playing of the men rather than upon team work that the eleven must depend in the game with Williams. Last year Williams held Harvard down to twelve points, and as five of last year's Williams team will play in today's game, the contest should be close.

The line up: HARVARD.  WILLIAMS. Littig, Burgess, r.e.  l.e., O'Neill Lawrence, Jones, r.t.  l.t., Hatch Grew, Barnard, Riggs, r.g.  l.g., Cole Greene, Sargent, Sugden, c.  c., Mossman, Leighton Robinson, Rainsford, l.g.  r.g., Cooper, Dennett Graydon, Eaton, Dodge, l.t.  r.t., Jones Bowditch, Hutchinson, l.e.  r.e., Wilbur Baldwin, Noyes, q.b.  q.b, Moore Knowles, Ives, Piper, r.h.b.  l.h.b., Graves, Watson Derby, Campbell, l.h.b.  r.h.b, Lawrence, Jaeckel Devens, Meier, f.b.  f.b., Peabody, Mears

The preliminary practice yesterday was longer than usual. Lewis and, Waters coached and W. A. M. Burden '00 was also out and coached the linemen. Ristine and Kernan came out for the first time, but the latter did not play Both Riggs and Hovey, who did not play on Thursday, were out yesterday, but did only light work. The playing was hard but careless, and there was much fumbling. The linemen wasted a great deal of energy in interfering and playing before the ball was passed. The men had a tendency to tackle high, and in this way lost much ground. The backs were either slow in starting or too quick, and betrayed the play before it was put into operation. Both Devens and Meier punted fairly well, but whatever advantage either side gained was lost by fumbling or carelessness. No touchdown was scored by either team.

The line-up: A  B Burgess, r.e.  l.e., Bowditch, Thayer Lawrence, r.t.  l.t., Eaton Barnard, Blagden, r.g.  l.g., Howe, Hollingsworth Greene, Sugden, c.  c., Sargent Rainsford, South, l.g.,  r.g., Grew Graydon, Dodge, l.t.  r.t., Jones Hutch nson, l.e.  r.e., Littig, Motley Baldwin, Marshall, q.b.  q.b., Noyes Ives, Jones, r.h.b.  l.h.b., Piper, R.
